Digital strategy

Set your digital strategy before you choose tools

By Optifirm's consultants2 min read

It has never been easier to buy a new digital tool, and never easier to end up with too many. When every department picks its own systems, costs grow, information is fragmented and nobody sees the whole. A digital strategy reverses the order, with direction first and tools second.

What a digital strategy is and is not

A digital strategy is not a list of systems to buy. It is a decision about how technology should help the business reach its goals. It covers which customer experiences you want to create, which processes should become more efficient and what information you need to make better decisions. The tools follow from that.

Five questions the strategy should answer

  1. Which business goals should technology support over the next two to three years?
  2. Where in the business is the most time, money or quality lost today?
  3. Which information matters most for your decisions, and where is it?
  4. Which parts should you own and develop yourselves, and which can you buy as standard?
  5. How do you measure that the investments actually deliver?

See the whole ecosystem

Systems, data, processes and people are connected. A new CRM affects the sales process, which affects invoicing, which affects the finance reports. That is why we always start by mapping the ecosystem, meaning which systems exist, how information flows between them and where double work or manual steps occur. That is usually where the biggest gains are.

Prioritise by value, not by trends

AI, automation and new platforms can deliver big gains, but only where they solve a real problem. Rank possible initiatives by business value, feasibility and risk. Choose a few that deliver a clear effect early, and let them pave the way for the bigger changes.

The best technology investment is the one that makes the next decision easier, not the newest one.

From strategy to delivery

A strategy that stays in a document creates no value. Break it down into a roadmap with concrete steps, ownership and metrics. Follow up regularly and adjust when the business or the market changes. What matters is that every step takes you closer to the goal and that you can show it.

Signs that it is time

  • The same information is entered into several systems.
  • Nobody has an overall picture of what you pay for licences and tools.
  • Important decisions are made on gut feeling because the data is hard to get.
  • New initiatives, such as AI, start without anyone knowing how they fit into the whole.

Optifirm sees the whole ecosystem of your business and sets strategic direction based on your requirements. Because we also build the systems, we take you all the way from strategic decision to delivery. Book a meeting and we will start with a review of where you are today.
